(Workshop Theme)
Mapping Nantou Old Town
“We begin our way with firm decision to learn and to understand everything. The endless corridors with endless niches, each of which we must observe. Next turn gives us a new perspective with new niches. And at theend of the way - the last glance at all what we have gone through.”
Alexander Brodsky & Ilya Utkin, 1987
01. Background
Landscape Architecture is not just about creating new things or spaces, but also finding and giving meaning. It is also to find ways to articulate the everyday situations of cities, and sometimes these situations can be very messy.
The Pearl River Delta Region with its increasing rural-to-urban migration, new industries, and other physical and social infrastructural growth is accompanied by exactly the kind of messiness that a landscape architect should dedicate attention to. This is especially in light of the advent One Belt One Road Program which will further boost the rate of change. Amongst this rapid urbanisation, many urban villages remained. These are old parts of the city that are relatively un-planned. Official planning agencies see them as embodying chaos, anarchy, and informality that must be tamed. They are thus often beautified or even demolished in the name of progress.
While these urban villages may not fit the current image of progress, their messiness do have something to offer landscape architects. Urban theorist Jane Jacobs argued that under a city’s messiness there is a hidden order that contributes to the streets and neighbourhoods’ vitality. City-building is more than just having an iconic skyline.
02. Workshop
It is with the intention of understanding how the messiness of the urban villages in the Pearl River Delta Region can have positive bearings on the social-urban fabric that we want to initiate a joint mapping workshop between the University of Pennsylvania and the South China University of Technology. Shenzhen’s Nantou Old Town will be used as our study site. Nantou is also Shenzhen’s oldest urban village and happens to be 2017’s main venue for the Shenzhen and Hong Kong Urbanism/Architecture Bio-City Biennale.
The workshop’s goal is not to produce a future picture of Nantou; instead, its goal is for both countries’ students to better understand how messiness contributes to vitality. More than documenting messiness, the aim is to understand the logic behind it, such as the locals’ survival tactics and spatial strategies to act resiliently against and along rapid urbanisation.
03. Methodology
Mapping Nantou Old Town begins with observing specific situations there through a “worm’s-eye view”. This entails observing very small“things” (e.g. a person, a small event, animate and inanimate objects). Observing these small “things” can lead to further greater and more complex networks that may extend beyond Nantou’s borders.
04. Outcomes
In terms of contributing academic knowledge to the field of architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture, mapping Nantou, and possibly areas beyond its borders such as the wider Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and even the Pearl River Delta Region can help better capture a deeper image of globalisation, hybridity, diversity and symbiosis. Hence, understanding the importance of multiscalar thinking and planning. In terms of contributing practical knowledge to the built environment professions, the knowledge the students will produce through mapping Nantou Old Town can evolve into design research tools for other designers, and even act as guidelines for planning public engagement for various government agencies.
The students final work will be exhibited in this year’s Shengzhen & Hong Kong UrbanismArchitecture Bio-City Biennale.
"When the individuals are reconnected and regrouped in a city, new urban context or connection is developed and this brings new possibilities" (Source: Villages of Tomorrow, Uncle Architecture)
Map is a site inventory without speculation that does not have much influence in the final outcome. Although a map would comprise all thep hysical characteristics or visible conditions of a site, it doesn’t reflect ordinary everyday life and subjective experience of space. The nature of maps as objective representation ignores the hidden potentials and hence simplifies the complexities and the richness of a place.
Instead of replicating what is already known, mapping unearths hidden aspects of a place and articulates the space we live in. It is a process of observation and discovery. In the process of mapping, new relationships and connections across site may be constructed and a systematic understanding of space/place may emerge. It is the product of a creative activity with a particular agenda that suggests new narratives and conceptual constructs by which to better understand the city.
So rather than representational, mapping is operational and efficacious. The emphasis is upon the generative process of seeing, noticing, revealing, and acting. It is a way for designers to unpack the complexities and richness of places in order to understand the qualities that already exist. Therefore, mapping becomes a strategic part of the design process and brings together analytical and propositional thinking.

(About Nantou Old Town)
Nantou Old Town, as the main venue, is the heterogeneous symbiosis of a historical town and a contemporary urban village. In the past century, the ancient town has gradually vanished, while the village was constantly expanding. The exacerbation of urbanization in Shenzhen has resulted in an intertwined layering of the historical town embedded in the urban village, which is again encircled by the city.
As the main exhibition venue, Nantou Old Town displays in a full spectrum a complete set of spatial evidence of the urban village transformation in recent history. It fully embraces its Chinese origin and Western influence, as well as the hybrid coexistence of the past and the present. As a laboratory of urban interventions, UABB 2017 will be organically woven into the regeneration of Nantou historical town to achieve a highly coherent, tailored and seamless result.
